SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, is seeking an Editor to join SPIE Press, one of the largest independent society presses in STEM publishing. The Editor will be responsible for the editorial, production, and publication functions of 6-8 new titles per year. Travel to SPIE’s technical conferences is required.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Perform required editorial functions and quality checks, including copyediting, proofreading, and author queries
- Work with editors, authors, and department managers to establish and meet project deadlines
- Work with vendors and in-house staff to ensure completion of production tasks such as composition and graphic design
- Ensure that publication database records are updated and maintained
- Update and maintain web CMS for assigned project area
- Ensure that project tracking procedures are followed and tracking reports are maintained
- Provide authors and/or editors with manuscript preparation information and support, including copyright and permissions requirements, figure specifications, etc.
- Where appropriate, schedule and coordinate peer review for manuscripts by topic experts and editors
- Where appropriate, prepare and maintain author contracts, publishing agreements, sales and royalty reports, etc.
- Plan overall design and layout of individual books
- Work with marketing/communications staff to provide content and information for promotional materials and social media

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong copy editing and proofreading skills and experience
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to interact with authors/editors via telephone and email
- Experience using spreadsheet software, such as Microsoft Excel or SmartSheet
Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, databases, web content management systems (CMS), and electronic publishing technologies and software - Travel roughly 5% to support SPIE conferences
- Web production skills (HTML, XML, or web content management systems) are helpful
- Experience with databases and customer relationship management software, such as Microsoft Dynamics CRM, is helpful
Education & Experience Requirements:
· BA or BS with English/communications or math/science concentration, or equivalent, relevant experience required.
· Two years editing experience, preferably technical editing, or equivalent educational or research background.

Compensation and Benefits package includes:
· Competitive wages, annual discretionary bonus. Pay Range $20.58 per hour to $29.86 per hour.
· Medical, dental & vision benefits provided (100% employer paid premium for the employee, 75% employer paid premium for the dependents).
· Defined retirement contribution: SPIE provides an automatic 5% contribution PLUS SPIE offers UP to 5% matching contributions and 25% vesting each year, 100% vested after 4 years.
· Paid Time Off plan beginning at 31 days per year.

Location: Physical work location in Bellingham, WA. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. The employer will not sponsor applicants for work visas.
